Frank Gohlke - Brief Biography & Book List

Brief Bio
Frank Gohlke, born 1942, is an American landscape photographer. He received an MA in English from Yale University in 1966. While there, he was introduced to Walker Evans (who was teaching at Yale at the time). He went on to study with Paul Caponigro; his work gained recognition in 1975 when he participated in a group exhibition called "The New Topographics" at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY.

Gohlke's work has centered primarily on the American landscape, from Grain Elevators in the midwest to the aftermath of natural disasters such as the Mt. St. Helen's eruption in 1980 (which MOMA featured in 2005). An excellent overview of his different work can be found on his website. He presently has a career retrospective at the Amon Carter Museum, which is featuring fairly high resolution photographs of his on their website. The retrospective will be moving to the Addison Gallery of American Art in the Spring of 2008. Several recent video interviews are available on-line concerning his career's work. They can be found here and here.

In addition to photography, Gohlke writes about landscape as well. A sample of his writing can also be found on his website.
